In Memoriam: Duane Smith

Dr. Duane Smith, Professor Emeritus of History at Fort Lewis College and longtime WHA member, died on November 26, 2024. 

Dr. Smith's active involvement with the WHA spanned nearly 50 years, during which he served on numerous committees, presented his work at conferences, and served on both the WHA Council and the Western Historical Quarterly Board of Editors from 1986 to 1988. In 2000, Dr. Smith was honored with Honorary Lifetime Membership by past WHA President Patricia Nelson Limerick. 

We invite you to read Dr. Smith's obituary to learn more about his life and storied career. Memorial services are scheduled for January 4th, 2025 in Durango, Colorado.
